Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her use of biting irony, along with her realism, humour, and social commentary, have long earned her acclaim among critics, scholars, and popular audiences alike.

Jane Austen published her books anonymously throughout her life. The books always bore the words "by a lady" which is engraved into the top of the cap. The overall shape is inspired by a seal wax stamp. It is estimated that Austen wrote at least 3000 letters in her lifetime, using a sealing wax stamp to seal her messages. The shape of clip inspired by the band of a reticule - a pouch-like ladies' handbag from the Regency era with a drawstring that doubles as a fastener and handle.
